GEORGIA COUNTY HONORS SELF-IDENTIFIED INDIGENOUS NATION, SPARKING ONLINE DEBATE
Chief Moon Hawk and representatives of the Yamassee-Guale Nation of Georgia were reportedly honored during an October 2026 Cobb County Board of Commissioners meeting.
The group, whose representatives include African Americans, identifies as an Indigenous nation and has sought official state recognition.
The presentation has sparked online debate about Native American ancestry, tribal identity and government recognition.
A county recognition ceremony does not necessarily establish state or federal tribal recognition.
Should governments require documented historical ancestry before officially recognizing Indigenous groups?
