During an episode of IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson featuring filmmaker Steven Spielberg, Michelle Obama shared a surprisingly relatable detail about her daughter, Malia.
Barack Got an Invitation Malia Never Gave Them
Spielberg revealed that Barack Obama had recently visited the set of his upcoming movie Disclosure Day.
According to Spielberg, it was the first movie set Barack had ever visited.
That led to a funny realization: Malia is also building a career as a filmmaker, but apparently her parents haven’t received the same invitation.
“She Doesn’t Want Us Around Her Stuff”
Michelle laughed as she explained that Malia prefers to keep her parents away from her professional projects.
“She will never invite us to anything that she does,” Michelle said, explaining that Malia simply doesn’t want them around her work.
For many parents, the situation may sound familiar.
Sometimes children want to create their own space—and having famous parents doesn’t necessarily change that.
Malia Is Building Her Own Career
Malia has worked in the entertainment industry and was a writer on the television series Swarm. She also directed the short film The Heart and has used the professional name Malia Ann.
Rather than constantly having her parents involved, she appears to be developing her own professional identity.
And Barack Had a Very Different Experience
While Malia keeps her parents away from her sets, Spielberg said Barack had a memorable time visiting the Disclosure Day set.
Spielberg joked that the cast became almost silent when the former president walked in because many of the younger actors knew him primarily from his public life.
For Michelle, however, the funniest part was probably that her filmmaker daughter won’t invite her parents to her work—while Spielberg invited Barack instead. 😅
Sometimes even the most famous parents in the world are simply… the parents their daughter doesn’t want hanging around at work. 👏🏼
