Two Missing Mothers Found Dead Inside a Submerged Jeep in Michigan 💔
What began as a desperate search for two young mothers has ended in heartbreaking tragedy.
Alexa Navarro, 23, and Vanessa Bautista, 24, disappeared after spending Saturday night celebrating Vanessa’s birthday in Elkhart, Indiana. Their families spent days searching for answers before police discovered a Jeep submerged in the St. Joseph River in Niles, Michigan.
Their Last Night Together
According to family members, Alexa and Vanessa went to The Arena Nightclub in Elkhart to celebrate Vanessa’s birthday.
Afterward, they dropped off a friend in South Bend and reportedly planned to get something to eat.
Their families last heard from them around 3:41 a.m. Sunday. Vanessa’s phone was later located in the Niles area before it stopped updating.
Then, there was silence.
The Search Took a Tragic Turn
Friends, relatives and community members joined the search, distributing flyers and looking throughout the South Bend and Niles areas.
On Tuesday, September 15, Niles police located a vehicle believed to be the women’s gray 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee submerged in the St. Joseph River.
Two women were found inside.
Police said their clothing matched what Alexa and Vanessa had been wearing when they disappeared. Formal identification and further investigation were still pending at the time of the reports.
What Happened to the Jeep?
Niles Police Chief James Millin said investigators believe the Jeep went over an embankment and entered the river.
But many questions remain.
Police have not yet determined why the vehicle was in Niles, what caused it to leave the roadway, who was driving, or exactly what happened before the Jeep entered the river. Authorities said the investigation will continue, including autopsies and toxicology testing.
At this stage, there is no confirmed evidence publicly establishing foul play.
