Hours earlier, Tupac and members of his entourage had been involved in a physical confrontation with Orlando Anderson, a member of the South Side Compton Crips, at the MGM Grand.

Later that night, as Tupac and Knight traveled along the Las Vegas Strip, a white Cadillac pulled alongside their BMW. Gunfire erupted, striking Tupac multiple times. Knight was also wounded, while Tupac was rushed to University Medical Center.

Six days later, on September 13, 1996, Tupac died from his injuries. He was only 25.

For decades, the shooting remained one of hip-hop’s most famous unsolved murders. No one had been convicted in connection with Tupac’s death.

That changed in 2023, when Las Vegas police arrested Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former gang leader and the uncle of Orlando Anderson. Davis became the only person ever prosecuted in connection with Tupac’s killing.

The Case Against Davis

Prosecutors did not allege that Davis was the gunman.

Instead, they argued that he helped organize the attack following the confrontation involving his nephew. Prosecutors described Davis as the person who helped plan the retaliation and supplied the weapon used in the shooting.

A major part of the prosecution’s case involved statements Davis had made over the years.

In his memoir, Compton Street Legend, Davis described being inside the Cadillac and said he tossed a gun into the back seat before the shooting. The memoir was admitted as evidence during the trial.

Davis’s defense challenged the reliability of his public accounts, arguing that he had exaggerated stories about his involvement to gain attention and notoriety.

A Verdict After Three Decades

After an 11-day trial in Las Vegas, jurors began deliberating on August 31, 2026.

Less than three hours later, they returned with a guilty verdict.

Davis, now 63, was convicted of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon in connection with Tupac Shakur’s killing. He is the first and, so far, only person convicted in the case.

The verdict brought a legal conclusion to a case that had remained unresolved for nearly 30 years and had become one of the most enduring mysteries in music history.

Davis is scheduled to be sentenced in October and faces a possible life sentence.

Tupac Shakur’s music and influence have continued long after his death. But nearly three decades after that September night in Las Vegas, the case surrounding his killing has finally produced a conviction.

On the night of September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur left a Mike Tyson boxing match in Las Vegas alongside Death Row Records executive Marion “Suge” Knight.
