The Haircut That Sparked a Debate About Parenting and a Teenager’s Choices

In January 2018, 13-year-old Kelsey Johnson of Fostoria, Ohio, received an unexpected birthday gift from her mother, Christin Johnson: highlights in her hair.

For Kelsey, it was a small change that made her feel good about herself. But just days later, a visit to her father’s home ended with a dramatic change to her appearance.

When Kelsey returned home, her highlighted hair had been cut short.

Christin said that Kelsey’s father, Schaffen Frederick, and stepmother, Sarah Murray, had ordered the haircut because they did not approve of the highlights. She shared before-and-after photographs of her daughter on Facebook, and the post quickly attracted enormous attention online, receiving tens of thousands of reactions and shares.

The story soon moved beyond social media.

Police in Haskins, Ohio, and Wood County Children’s Services investigated a possible child-abuse complaint related to the incident. Frederick and Murray, who were volunteer firefighters with the Middleton Township Fire Department, were placed on leave while the investigations were underway.

The adults involved did not publicly discuss the details of what happened, and Kelsey herself did not comment publicly.

Afterward, Christin took her daughter to a salon. Kelsey was reportedly allowed to choose a wig for herself, and her mother said that seeing her daughter smile again meant everything.

A Bigger Question

The incident raised a question that goes far beyond one haircut: How much control should parents have over a teenager’s appearance?

Parents and guardians are responsible for setting boundaries, especially when children are young. Haircuts, clothing, makeup and other appearance-related choices can become part of those disagreements as teenagers begin developing their own identities.

At the same time, teenagers can view changes to their appearance as deeply personal. What may seem like “just hair” to an adult can feel like an important part of a young person’s confidence and self-expression.

Kelsey’s story became widely discussed because something as ordinary as a haircut turned into a much larger debate about parental authority, discipline, self-expression and where the line should be drawn.

And perhaps that is what made the story resonate with so many people: When does a parent’s right to make decisions for their child meet a teenager’s growing right to have a say in who they are?
