The Mystery of Asha Degree: 26 Years Without Answers

On February 14, 2000, nine-year-old Asha Degree disappeared from her home in Shelby, North Carolina.

More than 26 years later, her disappearance remains one of the state’s most haunting unsolved cases.

Asha was last known to be inside her home. Around 2:30 a.m., her father checked on her and saw her sleeping. Several hours later, around 6:30 a.m., her mother went to wake the children and discovered that Asha was gone.

Her bed was empty.

So was her backpack.

A Child Walking Alone in the Dark

Investigators soon received reports that a young girl matching Asha’s description had been seen walking along Highway 18 around 4 a.m.

One driver reportedly tried to turn around to check on her. But by the time the vehicle returned, the girl had left the road and disappeared into the woods.

That remains one of the most puzzling parts of the case.

Why would a nine-year-old leave her home in the middle of the night and walk along a dark highway?

Investigators have never established a definitive answer. The FBI has described the Highway 18 sighting as the last known sighting of Asha.

The Backpack Found More Than a Year Later

Asha’s backpack was eventually discovered approximately 20 miles north of where she was last seen, about 16–17 months after her disappearance.

Inside were several of her belongings, including a library book called McElligot’s Pool. Investigators also found a New Kids on the Block T-shirt that they said did not belong to Asha and publicly sought information about its owner.

The discovery created new questions rather than answers.

How did the backpack travel so far from the place where Asha was last seen? And who had handled it?

A Possible Vehicle

Investigators also pursued reports that Asha may have entered a vehicle.

The FBI previously sought information about a green 1970s-era Ford Thunderbird or Lincoln Mark IV that investigators believed could have been connected to her disappearance.

That vehicle theory became important again years later when investigators searched properties connected to a Cleveland County family in 2024.

A Major Break in 2024

In September 2024, the investigation suddenly returned to the headlines.

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, FBI and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation searched multiple properties connected to the case. Authorities confirmed that the searches were based on physical evidence connected to Asha’s disappearance. Items of interest were seized for analysis, but officials emphasized that no human remains were found.

Search warrants released afterward revealed an even more significant development.

Investigators stated that they believed Asha had been the victim of a homicide and that her body had been concealed. The warrants identified people and properties investigators were examining in connection with that theory.

A green vehicle was also seized during the searches because investigators believed it resembled a vehicle potentially connected to the case.

Despite the extensive searches, Asha’s remains were not recovered.

Still No Arrest

The 2024 developments did not immediately lead to criminal charges.

Authorities have continued investigating the case, and Asha has never been found.

The FBI has emphasized that the investigation remains active and that investigators continue to pursue leads. In its overview of the case, the agency noted that new investigative technology could potentially help examine evidence collected more than two decades ago.

The Question That Remains

Asha disappeared more than two decades ago, but the central questions remain.

Why did she leave her home?

Who, if anyone, encountered her after she walked into the darkness?

What happened to her after she disappeared from Highway 18?

And where is Asha today?

The answers have remained elusive. But investigators continue to seek information, while her family and community continue to hope that the mystery surrounding her disappearance can eventually be resolved.

For more than 26 years, Asha Degree’s name has remained connected to one unanswered question:
