The Lake Oconee Mystery: An Elderly Couple Was Murdered, and 12 Years Later There Are Still No Arrests 💔

In May 2014, friends became worried when 88-year-old Russell Dermond and his 87-year-old wife, Shirley, failed to show up for a Kentucky Derby gathering in their gated Lake Oconee community in Georgia.

What they discovered at the couple’s home would begin one of Georgia’s most haunting unsolved murder investigations.

Russell Was Found in the Garage

On May 6, friends went to check on the couple.

Russell was found dead inside the garage. Investigators determined that he had been decapitated, but his head was never recovered.

Shirley was nowhere to be found.

At first, investigators feared she may have been abducted and could still be alive. The search for her continued.

Ten Days Later, Another Terrible Discovery

On May 16, fishermen found Shirley’s body floating in Lake Oconee, about five miles from the couple’s home.

Her body had been weighed down with concrete blocks. An autopsy determined that she had suffered fatal blows to the head.

The discovery transformed the case into a double-homicide investigation.

A Quiet Community Left With Questions

The murders were especially shocking because the Dermonds lived in a gated community.

Investigators found no obvious evidence that the killings were simply part of an ordinary burglary, and the case produced few answers despite years of investigation.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills has said he believes more than one person may have been involved, although no suspects have been arrested or charged.

Then Investigators Found New DNA

More than a decade after the murders, investigators announced that they had identified additional DNA evidence connected to the case.

In 2024, the FBI said the sample did not belong to Russell or Shirley and sent the evidence for additional testing.

As of 2026, investigators were still pursuing DNA leads and other information. The FBI and local authorities have repeatedly appealed to the public for help, and a reward remains available for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The Mystery Still Has No Ending

More than 12 years later, nobody has been arrested for the killings.

Russell’s missing head has never been found, Shirley’s killer or killers remain unidentified, and investigators still don’t have a publicly established motive that explains the entire crime.

For the Dermond family, the questions that began in May 2014 remain unanswered.

Who entered their lives that night—and why were Russell and Shirley targeted? 💔🕊️
